Kansas Takes Adoption Seriously – Governor Calls for National Adoption Month

While the process of adoption can be daunting, it is also one of the most beneficial acts that Kansas parents can make. Adoption is a great way to support the community and provide a loving home for children who are in the foster and adoption systems. Last week, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback proclaimed November as National Adoption Month. This proclamation highlights the fact that there are currently more than 400 children in Kansas in need of adoptive families.

Because there are so many children in the foster and adoption systems, Governor Brownback has called for Kansas and Missouri agencies to unite together in order to help prospective adoptive parents learn about the process of adoption. Additionally, initiatives are designed to provide prospective adoptive parents with guidance on the best steps to take to start the process, and to help them understand the importance of adoption for the children in the foster and adoption systems. In addition to the 400 children up for adoption in Kansas, there are an estimated 1,400 more in Missouri. While many of these children are in foster care, others are completely without parental guidance. According to adoption experts, one of the primary reasons why so many children are up for adoption is because most prospective adoptive parents are unsure of where to start the process, how the process begins, and what resources are needed.
